Kickstarter Shout-out: Project Scissors: NightCry

Image
I was originally going to talk about three different sprite-based video games on Kickstarter, but when this one, Project: Scissors: NightCry popped up, I had to talk about it first because of the people behind it. So, yeah, expect the pixel-based one in the near future. In terms of how the horror-survival genre is doing right now, I think they are in another rut. It isn’t because the horror genre is trying to be the next big Resident Evil or Silent Hill game-changer, but it’s because of an oversaturation of garbage. I think the problem is that now every game wants to be like P.T., Alien Isolation, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent and be this first-person horror experience that they think people will love. Sadly, this has led to a major boatload of poorly put together titles, where every game feels the same. The sad fact is that most, if not 98%, of horror games that are developed end up being made solely and soullessly for the big YouTube personalities. They know the personalities will ta...

Kickstarter Shout-out: Drift Stage

It’s 2015, and that means a brand new batch of Kickstarters to talk about. Sadly, through November and December, it was a wasteland of Kickstarters that were not interesting or all that well put-together. Luckily, it is January 2015, and fresh new batches of Kickstarters have caught my attention. I could have talked about the new Shadowrun: Hong Kong Kickstarter , but you can forget about that! It made its Kickstarter funding in just a few hours of its launch, and honestly, I need to play the first game so I am not fully familiar with the product. There is also this cool action RPG called Maestros of the Anthymn . It’s a very unique game that has a creative battle system. I will probably write something about this Kickstarter in the future. I was in the mood for a simple, but entertaining racer that captured the essence of Daytona U.S.A, 90s Arcade Racer, and the Outrun franchise. Well, even though these guys just passed their funding goal with flying colors, I am still going to talk a...

Kickstarter Shout-out: Five Varied Kickstarters To Check Out!

Image
Many times, I have seen the Kickstarter page get filled up with projects that are pretty much all the same. Sure, some might look different, but in the end, they are all the same game. Either a MMO that has no rules, or another zombie-filled game that will probably end up going to the pile of poor-looking and not fun zombie games you see on Early Access or on Steam. Luckily, Kickstarter picked up steam recently with a lot of interesting and varied games, including Thimbleweed Park by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick! This article will be yet another Kickstarter Shout-out covering multiple Kickstarters! How about we get started, since I have five interesting projects that you will all surely love to hear about? Kelvin and the Infamous Machine This 2D-point-and-click adventure game revolves around a scientist named Dr. Edwin Lupin, who made the first ever time machine. And yes, it does look like a portable shower. Unfortunately, the time machine gets labeled as the lamest invention of the ye...

Kickstarter Shout-out: Thimbleweed Park

With Tim Schafer and many other industry veterans returning to the gaming scene with Kickstarter projects that pan out positively for the most part, I was wondering why more of the industry veterans like Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick don’t take a shot at Kickstarter? Well, Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick are now on Kickstarter with their newest project Thimbleweed Park. For those that need a refresher course, Ron Gilbert and his partner in crime, Gary Winnick, were two of the other bigwigs alongside David Grossman and Tim Schafer of LucasArts. They created famous adventure games like Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis, and Day of the Tentacle. Of course, Ron Gilbert is also known for his recent hits like Deathspank, Deathspank: Thongs of Virtue, and The Cave. Garry Winnick has also had success and popularity with his comic book series “Bad Dreams.” So, what do you get when you have two of the adventure gaming world’s biggest names go to Kick...

Kickstarter Shout-out: Words Are Power

Oh boy, how do I start this article off? If you follow anything about gaming, these past few months have had the gaming industry, and gaming in general, in a huge political uproar between gender equality, ethics in gaming journalism, and a lot of other topics that have gotten people buzzing. I guess since I have stayed out of the way of all this up to this point, I should at least give my two cents on the overall set of topics. I do think there needs to be equality among genders and races, I do think there needs to be more variety and well-made characters for our video games and not just buff white guys, and I do think there needs to be some changes made to the overall gaming journalism scene to where there aren’t any shady or crummy situations popping up. As for the infamous Anita Sarkeesian, the woman behind the online series, Feminist Frequency, and her videos about women in video games, I think she has good intentions with the video series, but I feel like she is tackling the issue...

Kickstarter Shout-out: Her Majesty's Spiffing

It always saddens me when I write about a Kickstarter and it doesn’t reach its funding goal. One example is Kaptain Brawe 2: A Space Travesty. I really wanted that game to reach its funding goal because the first game was charming and quirky, but it sadly didn’t. I think one reason it didn’t was even though it has had tried twice to get the game funded, the Kickstarter video was still the same one that was used last time. I think the lack of any actual gameplay footage to show off with temporary voices for the characters is what killed the Kickstarter. These days, you must have something to show off or else you won’t see your funding goal met. I hope Kaptain Brawe 2: A Space Travesty does get made and I wish the developer good luck! Now then, how about we move onto another quirky adventure game that has a playable prototype for you all to try out? This is where Her Majesty's Spiffing: The Empire Staggers Back comes into play. This is a 3D adventure game that not only has voice work...

Kickstarter Shout-out: Rogue Wizards

With the disappointment of Diablo III, and just how long it took to make the game, other dungeon-crawlers and isometric RPGs have moved on up to the east side to become what dungeon-crawlers should be designed like. We have Torchlight and its sequel Torchlight II, and of course, with the help of Kickstarter, we have gotten a multitude of isometric RPG Kickstarters. You have examples such as Wasteland 2, Popup Dungeon, InSomnia, Hard West, and you get the idea. We are in no short supply of these kinds of games, but it always doesn’t hurt to keep talking about the more interesting dungeon-crawlers that appear on Kickstarter. This is the case of Rogue Wizards, a procedurally-generated dungeon-crawler that has some serious ex- Blizzard and other RPG talent looking to make what looks like a promising game. Let’s jump on in and see why Rogue Wizards is getting my Kickstarter Shout-out! We will be skipping directly into the gameplay, since Rogue Wizards doesn’t really have a story besides you...
