Kickstarter Shout-out: Spooky Poo's HAPPY HELL
For a short while, 3D platformers were popping up all over Kickstarter. You have the famous A Hat in Time, which is doing well in its development time and is a crowd favorite in terms of indie games. We also have the upcoming Lobodestroyo, a 3D platformer about a luchadore mask-wearing wolf. It’s a bummer that we don’t see more of these kinds of games, because during the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Original Xbox days, we had a multitude of 3D platformers. These days, it seems like all we are ever getting are 2D platformers. Luckily, Kickstarter has recently brought us two different Kickstarters that happen to be 3D platformers. The first one we will talk about is Spooky Poo’s HAPPY HELL. If you love 3D platformers, and love the art style seen in the very old Fleischer cartoons of the 20s and 30s, then this Kickstarter is up your alley.
Here’s the premise. Spooky Poo, a cat with a Jimmy Durante-style nose wants to make a wish. Through common logic, he goes to the devil to ask for said wish! The devil tells Spooky that if he can make it through his HAPPY HELL, then he will grant Spooky his wish. The story is very simple, but like a lot of 3D platformers or platformers in general, the focus is more about platforming and creative level design.
Spooky Poo’s HAPPY HELL is a 3D platformer, which is described as a more “crazy” version of Super Mario 64. So, you can go into these nine different levels of Hell, but apparently, it’s going to be a tough challenge! Luckily, the devil, being the kind generous soul that he is, will offer you some power-ups if you end up giving him some of your soul. These power-ups include a flying cape, a nose cannon, a spinning attack, a broom that makes you go fast, and so on. Each of the nine levels has five different goals, and each goal’s reward is a heart called a “Good Thing.” The one person that is behind this project has said that you can solve these problems in a multitude of ways. The levels also have a multitude of short-cuts, hidden levels, and bonuses if you choose to find them. Oh, and you know how the devil will give you power-ups if you so choose to get some? Well, he also said that you can beat the game without getting one of them. There are stretch goals that range from a higher difficulty mode to console ports for the Wii U and PlayStation 4.
I love the art style for this game. It really does bring me back to watching a couple of the Fleischer cartoons back in the day when television networks were awesome for airing stuff like that during the 90s. If you love stuff like “Koko the Clown,” “Betty Boop,” or the upcoming game Cuphead, then you will love this art style. The music also reflects that time period of cartoons. It’s catchy and very jazzy.
So, what are some of my concerns for the game? Well, there are my typical concerns for any platformer. I hope the controls are tight, the levels compliment your platforming controls, and that the game will have the right amount of challenge that won’t require you to do trial-and-error-style platforming. My only other concern is the variety in levels. I love platformers, but if I feel like the levels do not differentiate from one another enough, I’m probably going to get bored.
In the end, I like this Kickstarter. It’s impressive since it’s only done by one guy. The game’s funding goal is $13K and it is currently at over $5K. It has stretch goals that include multiple endings, home console versions, and voice acting. If you love platformers from the N64, then you should definitely check this game out! Congrats to Occultimate Games, Spooky Poo’s HAPPY HELL gets my Official Kickstarter Shout-out!
