Kickstarter Shout-out: Charmixy: Witch Academy
As much as I enjoy seeing big/ambitious Kickstarter projects, it’s nice to check out something more simplistic and charming in its own right. It doesn’t always have to be yet another tactical RPG with hand-drawn animations, or an open-ended first person game. This time, we are going to look at a mobile game that combines elements of Columns, dungeon crawling, dating sim, and potion making. This is Charmixy: Witch Academy, a mobile phone game that is attempting to get funded by Kickstarter.
This hopefully funded game takes place in a witch academy. You get to make your own male or female witch. Your main goal in the game is to interact with the many students that go to the academy, learn spells, date a character you like, and defeat an evil force that wants to take over the academy. It’s a simple story, but as long as the dialogue and the interactions between the characters are well executed, then I don’t mind.
So, what kind of game is Charmixy: Witch Academy? Well, as I mentioned earlier, it’s a puzzle game, combined with dating sim, dungeon crawler, and potion-making elements. A majority of the gameplay will be you battling against fellow students or real-life friends in Columns-style puzzle gaming, where you match blocks of similar patterns. However, the blocks will fall Tetris-style so you will need to make sure each block lands where you need it to. You will also be able to use certain spells to help you out in the puzzle gameplay, like crippling the opponent. Outside of puzzle solving and dungeon crawling through, well, dungeons, you will be interacting with your fellow classmates and potentially falling in love with one another. If you have played any dating sim or something like Sakura Wars: So Long My Love, then you will know what to be in for. Overall, I like a lot of the elements that are in a game that is coming to the iPhone. Sometimes I forget that there are some rather impressive iPhone games out there in terms of gameplay.
Graphically, I like the bright colors and the “Sailor Moon” manga-style look. It’s enjoyable to see an anime-looking game that has a different look to it rather than the usual clean-cut anime that you see in a multitude of soulless visual novels. The music is very bubblegum pop, and I am fine with that. I don’t mind a super cheery soundtrack as long as the music is catchy and memorable.
So, what concerns do I have about this game? Well, my biggest concern is that since they are not very close to getting to their $15K funding goal, they might get unfairly judged because it’s a mobile game. I know the mobile market has a reputation for poor quality games and the horrible business design of free-to-play, but if you just try out the really good ones like Devil’s Attorney or Monument Valley, then you will be singing a slightly different tune about mobile games. I just hope the bad reputation of mobile games does not turn people off to this charming little project.
As you can tell, I like this project. I respect when indie developers do push the envelope, but at the same time, I love little projects like this. Like I said, the funding goal is $15K, and as of April 20th, they are currently over $3K. They have stretch goals where you can race fellow witches on brooms and raise animals. If you love puzzle games or quirky games that anyone could enjoy, then Charmixy: Witch Academy might be the Kickstarter for you. Congrats to Tess Young, Charmixy: Witch Academy gets my official Kickstarter Shout-out!
