Kickstarter Shout-out: FreezeME

I have been very bad with keeping up with a lot of Kickstarters this year. On top of my Patreon and other events that are happening in my life, I have missed out on talking about certain Kickstarters. There was the Chinese-themed adventure game called Detective Di and the Silk Rose Murders, the gorgeous The Song of Seven Episode 1, the comeback of Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove, the massively successful “Game of Thrones”-style MMO Crowfall, and the unfortunately not successful funding of the Vanillware-inspired The Vagrant. However, I am now fully committed to talking about Kickstarters that deserve your attention, and today’s Kickstarter Shout-out goes to FreezeME by Rainy Night Creations. Let’s run and jump into this 3D platformer, and see why it deserves your potential investment!

FreezeME stars a little girl named R, or, how the internet has delightfully nicknamed her, Hipster Dora. R is walking with her best friend one day, a dog named M, who is then kidnapped by a fat blue cat named, well, Fat the Cat. It is up to R to get her friend back before Fat the Cat can make a world that is dog free. Well, I have two dogs that I love very much, so I definitely want R to stop this evil cat.

FreezeME is a 3D platformer where you will run around large worlds in the same vein of Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. There are also a lot of elements from Super Mario Galaxy with the floating spheres and the faux gravity element to some of the stages shown in the footage. So, what will this platformer be doing that is so different from other 3D platformers that have made their way to Kickstarter? Well, it has a time-stopping mechanic. The camera R is holding has the ability to stop objects from moving. This means you can stop anything, from a block of ice blocking other pieces of ice so you can cross a path safely, to stopping a log midair to get to another platform using said log as a bridge. At some point in the game, you will also be able to have an ability to fly. The stages seem to be built around the designs of Banjo Kazooie where you play in one huge level, but have multiple objectives to complete. The game will also have a hub world that you can go to when you need to traverse from level to level.

I adore the child-like imagination that is in the game’s graphics. Sure, some areas of the game look a little chunky, but it will look better once the game is released. I love the bright colors, the open-ended levels, and how it reminds me of something a child would think of after playing the best of the best 3D platformers of all time. The music is very upbeat, and just made me feel good while watching the trailer. It is being composed by Case Portman, who has worked on two other games called Copod and Diehard Dungeon. He has worked on other games, but you can go to caseportman.com to check out his music.

Like always, I do have some concerns about the overall Kickstarter. I hope the controls are tight, since platformers live and die by them. However, the rest of my concerns will be addressed in the future, because I am going to interview the developers! Stay tuned for that!

In the long run, I like this Kickstarter. I always enjoy 3D platformers, and this one, while being very familiar to many games in the genre, still has some interesting elements that make it look like a fun game. Any platformer that reminds me of my all-time favorite game Super Mario Galaxy 2 is doing something right. As of April 13th, the game is at over $5K and needs to hit $15K. If you love platformers, and want to support another platformer besides A Hat in Time, then you should check this game out! Congrats Rainy Night Creations, FreezeME gets my official Kickstarter Shout-out!
